A different kind of coffee shop

Nikki Korkis used to hang out at coffee shops while she was a student at Oakland Community College and the University of Michigan-Dearborn in the 1990s.

But the 30-year-old Berkley resident says the shops she visited were often too small and did not offer anything warm to eat. That's why she wanted to try something different when she opened up her shop, Cafe Mocha, in Sterling Heights last April.

The shop, in the Monte Carlo shopping plaza on Ryan Road just north of 14 Mile, offers soups, sandwiches, desserts and, of course, coffee.

But the establishment also has big-screen televisions, wireless Internet, a hookah bar and a large room with multicolored sofas, chairs and tables that attracts a large clientele of young professionals, as well as college and high school students. Hookah is a fruit-flavored tobacco that is smoked out of a communal-style pipe. That area is only for people 18 and older.
