New shop serves up unique coffee, tea

ohn Currie could tell you the name of his top-secret roaster. But then he'd have to shoot you.

That they live in North Carolina is about as much as you get out of him. Drawn to his custom-roasted coffee, employees of nearby businesses and day spa visitors have formed a solid, if confined, customer base for J. Currie Coffee & Tea, 522-B Broadway St., Myrtle Beach.

"Oh no," said the longtime Myrtle Beach local, laughing. "I don't want anyone else to start using him."

With a scant 264 square feet in his shop, Currie began offering takeout lunch about two weeks ago.

In addition to his custom private-label coffee blends and imported teas, Currie offers sandwiches stuffed with cranberry-parsley-pecan-spiked chicken salad or shrimp salad. He also has a club, a grilled three-cheese trio, and a vegetarian. He even bakes Toll House chocolate chip cookies. All have chic names - the "Downtown" and the "Broadway" are among them - and the business has steadily become a local standby in the rebuilt section of Broadway Street often called "Historic Downtown Myrtle Beach."
